Level I

Decision Making in Avalanche Terrain

The Level I is a 3-day (24-educational hour) introduction to avalanche hazard management. We offer two types of courses: Classroom-based and Hut-based.

These courses are the standard for the winter recreationist and forms the foundation for the aspiring professional.

Learning objectives for Level I:

- Provide a basic understanding of avalanches.
- Describe a framework for decision making and risk management in avalanche terrain.
- Focus on identifying the right questions, rather than on providing “answers.”
- Give lessons and exercises that are practically oriented, useful, and applicable in the field.

Prerequisites: You must have the ability to travel in winter backcountry terrain. Telemark/AT Skis or Split Snowboard with skins is preferred equipment. Snowshoes will work too.

AIARE Level 1 Course

This course spans three eight-hour days (8:30 am – 4:30 pm) held usually over a three day weekend at our Field Office at Three Creeks Sno Park. Participants must come prepared for indoor and outdoor study.

Cost: $290 per student

AIARE Level 1 Course – Hut-based

Our Hut-based Level I course includes additional field time, based out of our Three Creeks Lake Huts.

Hut-based Course Features:

- Two nights in our backcountry huts
- Classroom instruction & discussion each morning and evening in the hut.
- Through total immersion this course offers a more thorough understanding of avalanche field observations to accelerate your education.

Course fees for this course include:

* Course Instruction & Texts
* Two nights lodging in our backcountry hut
* Snowmobile roundtrip portage. Snowmobile transportation will not be available during the course (except for emergencies) so please plan on spending three full days in the backcountry.

Participants will need to provide their own meals. The hut will be equipped with a kitchen.

Cost: $490 per student
